Going North

Mercredi 16 juin 2021. Røst-Værøy.

Le temps est meilleur aujourd’hui, mais le vent est fort le matin et va baisser, donc nous attendons pour partir. Encore un tour en vélo, par des petites routes qui ne vont nulle part. Røst est agréable pour faire du vélo, c’est plat et il y a de nombreuses pistes cyclables. Mais ce qui manque ce sont des informations, aucun panneau, aucun plan, aucune information sur l’histoire, nous sommes obligés d’aller sur internet. Et là, il faut que je vous parle de Pietro Querini, un capitaine italien qui, en 1431 part de Crête pour aller à Brugge (Belgique). Ils sont 68 hommes à bord. Le bateau est pris dans une terrible tempête, le mat casse, le gouvernail aussi. Les hommes embarquent dans deux chaloupes. L’une disparait rapidement et l’autre va dériver des semaines. Elle va arriver près de Røst en janvier 1432 et 11 survivants sont sauvés par les pêcheurs de Røst. Ils restent tout l’hiver et embarquent pour Bergen au printemps suivant. Pietro Querini a écrit le récit de son voyage et l’observation de la vie des pêcheurs de Røst et de leur famille. Il a aussi introduit les Italiens au « Stockfish », le poisson séché de Lofoten. Encore maintenant, l’Italie est le plus gros importateur de stockfish, qu’ils appellent « stoccafisso ». Bon, revenons au présent : nous partons à 15 h, il fait beau, vent modéré … mais la houle est toujours là, et non seulement d’une direction mais de deux. Ce qui fait des vagues croisées qui font bien danser Maja. Mais il fait beau et il faut prendre patience, peu avant d’arriver à Værøy, les vagues se calment un peu. Værøy est très différente de Røst, c’est montagneux et une partie seulement est plate et habitée. Nous entrons dans le port de Værøy et le guide indique un ponton municipal pour les visiteurs juste après la jetée. Nous y allons, nous amarrons et je vais voir une pancarte qui nous avertit que, si on ne s’enregistre pas dans les 15 minutes ( !), nous devrons payer pour un mois. Pas très aimable. Et en plus, c’est moche, donc nous repartons et allons plus au fond du port où un petit club de bateau a lui aussi un ponton pour les visiteurs. Et là, c’est moins cher, plus aimable et plus joli. Il est 19 heures, rapide blog pour moi pendant que Jens prépare un bon petit diner.

The weather is better today, but the wind is strong in the morning and will drop, so we wait to leave. Another bike ride, along small roads that go nowhere. Røst is nice for cycling, it is flat and there are many cycle paths. But what is missing is information, no signs, no maps, no historical information, we have to go on the internet. And there, I must tell you about Pietro Querini, an Italian captain who, in 1431 left Crete to go to Brugge (Belgium). They are 68 men on board. The boat is caught in a terrible storm, the mast breaks, the rudder too. The men embark in two rowboats. One disappears quickly and the other will drift for weeks. It will arrive near Røst in January 1432 and 11 survivors are saved by the fishermen of Røst. They stay all winter and leave for Bergen the following spring. Pietro Querini wrote an account of his journey and the observation of the life of the fishermen of Røst and their families. He also introduced the Italians to "Stockfish", the dried fish from Lofoten. Even now, Italy is the biggest importer of stockfish, which they call "stoccafisso". Okay, back to the present: we leave at 3:00 p.m., the weather is fine, the wind is moderate… but the swell is still there, and not just from one direction but from two. That makes crossed waves which make Maja dance well. But the weather is nice and we have to be patient, shortly before arriving in Værøy, the waves calm down a bit. Værøy is very different from Røst, it is mountainous and only part of it is flat and inhabited. We enter Værøy harbor and the guide points to a municipal pontoon for visitors just after the pier. We go there, we moor and I see a sign warning us that if we don't check in within 15 minutes (!), we will have to pay for a month. Not very friendly. And besides, it's ugly, so we leave and go deeper into the harbor where a small boat club also has a pontoon for visitors. And there it is cheaper and prettier. It's 7pm, quick blog for me while Jens cooks a nice little dinner.
