Jeudi 17 juin 2021.
Thursday June 17, 2021. Værøy.
Gray and windy. Cycle tour, first to the helipad and
fish driers and then to the next bay to the west. We stop to talk to a man who is
mowing his lawn. His last name is Hardy, his family emigrated from Belgium
around 1800. He knows a lot about Værøy, it's interesting. We pass a
"pass" of a few meters and arrive at a beautiful pebble beach. We
come back, do some shopping at the supermarket and go back to the boat for
lunch. 700 people live here and according to Hardy there is a kind of
competition between Røst and Værøy. We leave after our stillestund, this time
to the north. We have to go through a pass, this time a real one, it goes up
and, obviously, it goes down on the other side. We see a port, well protected
by two dikes but deserted. In the old times the main village used to be on this
side, it's called Nordland, this is where the old church was. But now the main
village is to the south, where the port is large, where the ferry arrives and
where a new church has been built. Its name is Sørland. In 1986, an airport was
built in Nordland. According to Hardy, the experts were against it, it was a
place of turbulences, but it was built anyway. In 1990, a plane crash claimed
the lives of several people and the airport was closed. We return with 28 km in
the legs, 10 this morning and 18 this afternoon. Too bad the weather is so
gray, a ray of sunshine would be welcome. At the boat, I do the blog and Jens
makes a pizza.
