Going North

Jeudi 24 juin 2021. Bolla. Rolla.

Jens monte les vélos à terre en passant sur le bateau de pêche. Nous allons à Hamnvik, la « capitale » de l’ile de Rolla. C’est le centre administratif de la commune d’Ibestad qui comprend deux iles, Rolla et la voisine Andørja. Ces deux iles sont reliées par un tunnel et Andørja est reliée au continent par un tunnel aussi. La population de la commune est d’un peu moins de 2000 personnes divisée entre les deux iles. Une chose que j’ai oublié de dire, c’est que depuis Røst, dans toutes les petites communautés où nous sommes passés, nous voyons de nombreuses maisons inhabitées, elles sont souvent bien entretenues mais vides. Jolie route qui suit la côte et, appréciable pour des cyclistes, assez plate. Les bâtiments administratifs à Hamnvik sont modernes et le supermarché est actif. Nous descendons voir l’entrée du tunnel et un petit port qui a l’air plus accueillant qu’à Bolla. Le ponton des visiteurs est ouvert, pas de clé et une pancarte qui leur souhaite la bienvenue. En repartant nous allons voir un panneau donnant des informations sur la commune, et nous y apprenons que les orchidées sont sur la côte sud-ouest et nous nous sommes sur la côte nord-est. Nous rentrons, déjeunons, café et journal et nous repartons vers la pointe nord de l’ile et redescendons un peu sur la côte ouest. Nous laissons les vélos et marchons dans une petite forêt vers la mer. Une jolie plage fait penser à se baigner … mais seulement penser. Nous rentrons au bateau, ayant eu notre ration de grand air pour aujourd’hui : 3 h ce matin et 3 h cet après-midi, 18 km ce matin et 12 cet après-midi.

Jens carries the bikes ashore passing over the fishing boat. We are going to Hamnvik, the "capital" of the island of Rolla. It is the administrative center of the municipality of Ibestad which includes two islands, Rolla and the neighbor Andørja. These two islands are connected by a tunnel and Andørja is connected to the mainland by a tunnel as well. The population of the town is just under 2,000 people divided between the two islands. One thing I forgot to say is that from Røst, in all the small communities we have been through, we see many uninhabited houses, they are often well maintained but empty. Pretty road which follows the coast and, appreciable for cyclists, quite flat. The administrative buildings in Hamnvik are modern and the supermarket is active. We descend to see the tunnel entrance and a small harbor that looks more welcoming than in Bolla. The visitors' pontoon is open, no keys and a sign welcomes visitors. On leaving we look at sign giving information about the island. And there we learn that the orchids are on the southwest coast and we are on the northeast coast. We go home, have lunch, coffee and newspaper and head back to the northern tip of the island and descend a bit on the west coast. We leave the bikes and walk in a small forest towards the sea. A pretty beach makes you think of swimming… but only thinking. We return to the boat, having had our ration of fresh air for today: 3 hours this morning and 3 hours this afternoon, 18 km this morning and 12 km this afternoon.
